10 Songs that defined the 90s (for me)

Presented in no particular order. Mostly because my favorite songs change depending on my mood.

1. “1979” – The Smashing Pumpkins. Easily my favorite song of all time, so it not only makes the list, it comes in first. Plus, the video for the song is perfect in almost every way.

2. “Hey Jealousy” – The Gin Blossoms. I might be the only person I know who still likes the Gin Blossoms. I’ve heard this song while walking around in grocery stores with songs that.. it has no business being around. But I still sang.

3. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” – Nirvana. Nirvana is on every list ever written about the 90s, as it should be. Plus, this song was the first rock song I ever liked. Don’t look at me that way, I was into rap at the time.

4 "Jump” – Kriss Kross. Speaking of rap, there’s about to be a lot more of it. I figured this would be a less jarring transition. Plus, I love that song so hard I would have its’ babies. True: To this day I start giggling maniacally when I hear the song start.

5. “Popular” – Nada Surf. My introduction to being a jaded teenager. Living in Florida at the time, there seemed to be a bit of a “surf rock” thing going on. That’s what I called it at the time, at least.

6. “Buddy Holly” – Weezer. I don’t really care for much of Weezer’s new music. With the exception of “Island in the Sun” and “Hash Pipe", of course. But everything about this song was spot on. And the video was awesome too.

7. “What do you want from me?” – Monaco. Another song I considered “Surf”.. which I still think it sort of is. Only because calling it “alternative” just doesn’t really cut it for me. Interesting note: The bassist for the first two Monaco albums was the bassist from Joy Division.

8.  “Impersonality” – Goo Goo Dolls. This was part of a trio of tapes that I bought. My uncle gave me a gift card for my birthday and I bought “A Boy Named Goo” , "Totally Krossed Out” (see #4) and “… And Out Come the Wolves” by Rancid. But I played “A Boy Named Goo” the most. I bought the tape because of Name but I fell in love with Impersonality. I haven’t heard that song in years but I’m pretty sure I still know all the words.

9. “Crash” – Dave Matthews Band. When I first heard that song, I thought that was what love sounded like. Plus, to this day I still love that song.

10. “Glycerine” – Bush. Back when I thought Bush was a heavy metal band…. don’t laugh. But this song was really the turning point for me, when I started to like rock more than rap. This is just one of those songs that puts me in a place and time and that’s really what music is all about.

Honorable Mentions: “Dammit” – Blink 182 and “Ruby Soho” by Rancid (see #8).

Comments are always appreciated. Whether you have something to say about my list or songs of your own that define the 90s, I’d love to hear about it.

Weird Dream

I don’t remember much. But I do remember talking to someone about my blog. I sheepishly told them “Yeah. I have a blog but I don’t update it much.”

Hopefully, that will change. I’ve been sitting on a write-up of Charles in Charge for a while. I’d also like to talk about The State. So we’ll see if it actually happens.. but, fingers crossed.
